Do It This Second!

Author: Dr. Gary S. Goodman

Theres no time like the present, right?

Unfortunately, most of us dont appreciate the wisdom in this saying. Our mantra might read: Dont do anything today that you can put off until tomorrow!

Theres a trick to getting all we can; it's giving all we can to the here and now.

Whenever you have an inspiration, do something right away, no matter how modest or small to fulfill the promise of it.

For example, I know a number of writers who are periodically afflicted with writers block. For some reason, theyve lost the will to compose.

In some cases, theyre pre-judging the quality of what they expect will issue from their pens and keyboards. Thisll just be junk, so why bother? is their attitude.

The problem is that this thought becomes the result of their inspiration, and not any tangible, written product. If theyd force themselves to write something, anything, immediately after being stimulated, theyd start to chip away at their blockages.

Theyd be so busy working that theyd eliminate any possibility of worrying about the quality of the product that will come out. Then, having something accomplished, they could add to it, refining it later.

But theyd feel better, because they seized the moment. After doing this repeatedly, theyd form a new, productive work habit that would continue to serve them.

The same thing applies to selling and to any activity with which we procrastinate. Doing anything, no matter how seemingly insignificant breaks the inertia in which weve been stuck.

And, as any writer can attest, by forcing ourselves to do it now, we sometimes surprise everyone with our accomplishments, including the toughest critics of allourselves.
