Why We Overspend Our Dollars

Author: Martin Lukac

People who overspend often share the same characteristics. Not every consumer struggles with overspending. Yet, if you do, you know that it isn't an easily won battle. Shopping can be a truly complex addiction, but it can be controlled.

One of the first things that you must do is understand why you overspend. I do it when I am stressed. It is one of the top releases I tend to have. I deal with it often, and sometimes cave in. But I know what my problem is, so I am able to fight back personally.

For a lot of people, shopping is simply a solution to boredom. It is a hobby for a lot of people. I have a friend that shops at resale shops at least twice a week. She knows when they get new stuff in and even when they have specials. She can't help but go. It's part of her weekly routine.

The habit of overspending isn't just found in department stores. There are a lot of people out there that are so addicted to buying things on sale, they don't notice how much they are spending. They only see what they are "saving" on an item. "You can't beat that price," they say. The more hours spent shopping equals the more bargains found which adds up to more money spent.

Instead of shopping, turn to other places for entertainment. Join a gym, plant a garden, work on a real hobby using things you already have or volunteer. Don't go in a store without a specific need. And then only buy what you go in for and nothing else. If you don't need anything in the scrapbooking aisle, don't go down it. That's just asking for trouble.

It is very easy to overspend if you aren't keeping accurate records. If you don't have a budget, you can't stay in it. The little things add up. Twenty dollars here and there can become thousands over a month. You need to track your spending and understand where you are spending and what you are spending on. Know how much money you have every day. This way, you won't spend more than you have out of ignorance.

Many people simply overspend because they don't understand how money works. They don't know how to manage their money. If you don't have a budget, savings and a debt elimination plan, you need to do a little research and get those things in order. Once you have goals you are working towards, the draw of spending seems to lessen. I now understand that twenty dollars here and there could add up to be that new furniture I want. So every time I am tempted, I think of that goal. Without managing my money, I would never be able to afford the things I truly want.

There are many reasons we overspend. Many people just don't care. We've been told that it is okay to buy now and pay later. But it really isn't the way to get financially ahead in life. The truly rich don't buy more than they can afford. In fact, the wealthy are known to be quite stingy. And that's why they are rich.
