Is There A Nicotine Conspiracy?

Author: David Trevena

The media talk about nicotine addiction, your doctor will prescribe patches and media reinforce the message. Millions (approx 70% of smokers) are afraid to quit because they fear cravings.

And yet, if nicotine is addictive, and if your local health authorities are correct that its as addictive (some say more addictive) as drugs such as heroin and cocaine, and if doctors prescribe nicotine patches to their patients, then there must be people addicted to patches mustnt there?

Have you met any?

Statistics of people who stop smoking are interesting. About 6% of people stop smoking using willpower. About 10% of people stop using gum. Thats an improvement, but not much of one. About 16% of people quit using patches, again, an improvement, but not much of one.

Now, if you turn those figures the right way up, that means that 84-90% of people trying nicotine replacement therapies fail. Statistically, nicotine replacement doesnt work! In fact, a placebo is more effective! (At 30% its almost twice as effective).

Isnt that interesting? A placebo, a pill without any medicinal value is more affective than the nicotine replacement therapies prescribed by your doctor or sold to you by your chemist. How can nothing be twice as effective as something prescribed by your Doctor?

Health care trusts are allowed to claim success if their patients stop for just one month You probably know people who have stopped smoking using willpower, gum or patches and who have started again a few months later.

Your doctor will confirm that all the nicotine is out of your body within 48 hours. Yet you probably know of people who have stopped smoking for weeks, months or even years and then started again. If all the nicotine was out of the system in 48 hours what got them started again?

Who has a vested interest in having smokers believe they are addicted to nicotine?
